New Plan Protects Baga Toiruu’s Heritage
At this week’s session, the Ulaanbaatar City Council approved the urban planning framework for Baga Toiruu, the city’s central area. The plan calls for preserving the traditional ger-shaped wooden temple layout in the zone between the Baga Toiruu and Ikh Toiruu and placing 177 architectural sites under protection.
A study will also assess whether 72 public-use apartment buildings can be reinforced. If redevelopment is necessary, they must retain their original style and height to preserve the city’s historic appearance.
According to Ulaanbaatar’s development plan through 2040, 24 percent of the city’s land will remain undeveloped, while historic and cultural landmarks will be preserved and restored. In total, 130 buildings are planned for protection.
